A one-day, one-way drive from Atlanta to Charleston that spends 64.9 of its 336.3 miles on interstate (I-20 out of Atlanta and 10 miles of I-95) and the rest on US and state highways: 7 h 8 min of driving, toll-free, through Madison, Washington, Edgefield, Aiken and Walterboro to Angel Oak and the Charleston waterfront.

  • Angel Oak: a free, centuries-old live oak on Johns Island
  • Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary: boardwalks over black-water swamp
  • Madison: a 1.4-mile walk through antebellum streets

The story

Atlanta to Charleston is a five-hour interstate slog. This version spends 7 hours instead, and less than a fifth of it on interstate: about 65 of the 336 miles, mostly I-20 out of Atlanta, and a 10-mile hop on I-95 near Walterboro.

After the quick run to Madison, the day turns to two-lane roads: a morning walk through a historic district of antebellum houses, US-278 and GA-44 to Washington, and then the best driving of the trip, US-378 across the Savannah River at Clarks Hill Lake and through Edgefield to Aiken for lunch on Laurens Street.

The afternoon drops from the Sandhills into the Lowcountry. SC-61 follows the Edisto River, a boardwalk in Walterboro's wildlife sanctuary gives a first taste of black-water swamp, and Johns Island's Angel Oak, a live oak with limbs that rest on the ground, is the last stop before Charleston. The finish is on the harbor at Waterfront Park.

It is a long day by design, with legs of 62, 68, 98, 114, 64 and 22 minutes and a stop between each.

Good to know

Assumption. Saturday departure at 7:00 am from Atlanta; hours below are for a Saturday. Angel Oak opens at 1 pm on Sundays, which breaks the schedule, so go on a Saturday or another weekday.

Driving rhythm. 62 min to Madison (40-minute walk), 68 to Washington (15-minute break), 98 to Aiken (lunch), 114 to Walterboro (30 minutes), 64 to Angel Oak and 22 to Charleston. Total 336.3 miles and 428 minutes (7 h 8 min) of driving, about 10 hours from the 7:00 departure to the 5:03 pm finish. The direct I-20/I-26 run is about 302 miles and 5 hours.

Interstate share. 64.9 of 336.3 miles: 54.6 miles of I-20 (Atlanta to Madison) and 10.3 miles of I-95 (near Walterboro). Everything else is US and state highways.

Tolls. None. Georgia's toll lanes are the Atlanta Express Lanes on I-85 and I-75, and South Carolina's only toll road is the Southern Connector near Greenville; this route touches none of them.

Time pressure. Angel Oak closes at 5 pm (last entry 4:50), and the schedule reaches it at 4:11. If you run late, skip the Walterboro boardwalk (30 minutes) rather than Angel Oak. In the shorter days of late autumn the finish is near dusk.

Lunch. New Moon Cafe's Aiken hours are 7 to 4 weekdays and 8 to 4 weekends; other Laurens Street cafes are within a block.

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-14). No closures were found on the pages read for Angel Oak, the Walterboro sanctuary, Madison or Waterfront Park. Road work and weather were not checked live: confirm GDOT 511 and SCDOT before leaving. Edisto Beach State Park (alternative route) lists two beach accesses closed because of high tides.

Confirm before you go. Hours, prices and fees come from the sources listed and change; confirm.
