Great Sand Dunes: 2 Days of Sand, Altitude and Mountain Light

Two realistic days at North America's tallest dunes: an easy arrival afternoon with the visitor center, the Montville forest loop and a first-ridge stroll, then one early-morning climb of High Dune, a reptile-park detour and lunch in Alamosa. One hotel base, honest drive times.

  • Climb High Dune on First Ridge early, when the sand is cool
  • Warm up on the Montville Nature Trail through pinon and ponderosa
  • Explore the creek bed and first ridge of dunes on an easy first afternoon
  • Slide down on a sand sled or board
  • Relax at Colorado Gators and eat in Alamosa

The story

Great Sand Dunes is a strange mash-up: a 30-square-mile sea of sand pressed against 13,000-foot peaks, at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The dunes are not a place to rush. The sand is slow, the air is thin, and in summer the surface can be punishing by midday, so the best plan front-loads effort in the cool hours and keeps everything else soft.

Day one is built for arrival. Lunch in Alamosa, then the visitor center film, the short forested Montville Nature Trail for an altitude warm-up, and a late-afternoon wander across the Medano Creek bed to the first ridge. Day two is the one real effort: High Dune at 8 a.m., when the sand is cool and the light is low, then a ride down on a sled or board if you rented one. After that the day is deliberately light: a stop at a geothermally heated reptile park and a relaxed lunch back in Alamosa.

The base is Alamosa, about 55 minutes from the dunes parking lot. That is a real commute, but it buys year-round lodging and dinner choices. If you prefer to sleep close, Great Sand Dunes Lodge and Piñon Flats Campground are listed as options. Late May-June and September-October are the most comfortable months.

Lunch at Emma's Authentic Food of the Southwest

A family-run Alamosa spot serving scratch-made Southwestern comfort food: stuffed sopapillas, shredded beef burritos, enchiladas and chimichangas, and a weekday lunch buffet with a salsa bar. Eat well here, because the next meal is dinner and the park has no restaurants.

Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center

Start with the 20-minute park film and the exhibits, then ask a ranger which route across the dunes suits your legs and the day's wind. This is also where you check out a sand wheelchair (call ahead to reserve) and fill water bottles before the dunes, which have no shade or water of their own.

Montville Nature Trail

A gentle forest walk on the mountain side of the park, climbing through pinon and ponderosa to a high point with views of Mount Herard, the dunes and the valley. A trailhead booklet numbers stops that tell the story of Montville, a 1800s settlement of about 20 houses. It is the easy warm-up for sand legs and a lungful of altitude.

Cross Medano Creek to the First Ridge of Dunes

Park at the Dunes lot, wade or walk the broad Medano Creek bed, and climb onto the first ridge for a no-pressure first taste of the dunefield. There are no trails, so follow ridgelines for the firmest footing and turn around whenever your legs say so. Wear closed shoes and long pants, and bring water and a windbreaker.

Leave Alamosa by about 7:00 to reach the Dunes lot for an 8:00 start on High Dune, then spend the rest of the day sitting down.

High Dune on First Ridge

The classic dunes hike and the one demanding effort of the trip: cross the creek bed, then zigzag up ridgelines to the top of a dune that stands 688 feet from base to crest. There is no trail, so footing is slow and the altitude bites. From the summit, mountains ring the sand sea in every direction. The ride down on a sand sled or board is the reward. Everything after it is easy.

More options

Hike

Option: Mosca Pass Trail

For a quiet forest day instead of the dune climb, hike the Mosca Pass Trail beyond Montville: a creek-side route through aspen and conifers to a low pass, with limited views but gold aspens in autumn. Treat it as an alternative to High Dune, not an addition.

Activity

Option: Stargazing at an International Dark Sky Park

The dry air, high elevation and little light pollution make the dunes area an easy dark-sky stop. Pick a moonless evening for the Milky Way (best seen in late summer and early fall), dress for frigid nights. It fits Day 1 only if you stay in or near the park after dark, since the hotel is about 55 minutes away.

Good to know

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-22)

  • Entrance fee: $25 per private vehicle; the Entrance Station is staffed on intermittent hours outside May-September and is listed closed Nov 1 2026 to Feb 28 2027 (call the Fee Manager at 719-378-6352 for hours on your day).
  • Visitor center: 9:00 AM-4:30 PM daily; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Park alert (updated 2026-10-16): creek crossings 3, 4 and 5 on the 4WD-only Medano Pass Primitive Road have deep water; this plan does not use that road. Paved-road destinations are unaffected.
  • Fire alert: Stage 1 restrictions began Aug 18; confirm status before any campfire.
  • Piñon Flats Campground: open April-October, reservable up to 3 months ahead on recreation.gov; $20 per night for an individual site.
  • Great Sand Dunes Lodge: Visit Alamosa lists it closed Nov 13 to Mar 5; confirm dates.
  • Colorado Gators: daily 9 AM-5 PM through Nov 1, then 9 AM-4 PM from Nov 2; admission $30 for ages 16-64.
  • Sand sleds/boards: not rented in the park. The Oasis Store and Spin Drift list mid-March through October; Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa (719-589-9759) is year-round but will not rent when sand is frozen; Oasis will not rent when sand is wet.
  • Medano Creek at the main Dunes lot is typically gone by late summer, so late-season visitors cross a dry bed.

Evergreen tips

  • Altitude: the park sits near 8,000 ft. Sleep, drink water and keep Day 1 easy before the dune hike; allow up to 4 hours for High Dune if you are not acclimatized.
  • Sand and weather: in summer, plan dunes time for early morning or evening, because sand surface temperatures can reach 150 F, and thunderstorms with lightning are possible. Spring brings afternoon wind; fall highs run roughly 50s-70s F with nights in the 20s-30s F. Pack layers, closed shoes, long pants, water and sun protection.
  • Walk on ridge tops for the firmest footing; you can see the mountains and visitor center for reference, so getting lost is unlikely.
  • No restaurants or lodging inside the park; eat in Alamosa or Mosca. There are no timed entries or reservations to enter the park.
  • Best seasons: late May-June for creek play (crowded weekends), September-October for cooler dune days and fall color; July-August needs dawn starts.
  • Sunday: Emma's is closed; use San Luis Valley Brewing Company (opens 11:00 daily) for lunch.
  • Dark sky: the Milky Way is highest in late summer and early fall on moonless nights.
