A one-day, one-way detour from Boston to Portland through the White Mountains instead of straight up I-95: 258.6 miles and about 5 h 29 min of driving with no tolls, a lakeside break in Meredith, the Kancamagus Highway, lunch in North Conway and a sunset-friendly finish above Casco Bay.

The story

Boston to Portland is a two-hour I-95 errand. This is the long way, on purpose: north into New Hampshire, across the White Mountains on the Kancamagus Highway, then east through Maine's lake country to a sunset on Portland's Eastern Promenade.

The day is built the way a real drive is. The first break comes at Meredith, on Lake Winnipesaukee, about two hours out, for a driver swap, coffee and a lakeside stretch. From there the road runs up I-93 to Lincoln and onto NH-112, the Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile National Scenic Byway that crosses a 2,855-foot pass and, per Wikipedia, stays open through the winter. A short stop at Sugar Hill Overlook for the view, and a 15-minute walk to Sabbaday Falls, are all this leg asks for. Lunch is grilled cheese in North Conway before the drive east on US-302 through Fryeburg and Bridgton to Songo Lock in Naples, then the last hour into Portland.

The whole day is under 5.5 hours of driving by the OSM router (258.6 miles), with five stops that each earn their place: a lake, a viewpoint, a waterfall, lunch and a historic lock, finishing at the Eastern Promenade above Casco Bay. Two alternatives (a Seacoast day with no turnpikes, and a Lakes Region and Chocorua Lake swap for the Kanc) are in the options.

Foliage timing matters. The Kancamagus is widely reported to peak in early to mid October and to be very busy on weekends, so a weekday start is better in peak season; a 7:30 start helps either way. In summer the same plan works with more daylight, and Songo Lock's boat season ends mid-October.

Day by day

Day 1

Boston to Portland through the White Mountains

Leave Boston at 7:30 and drive to Meredith on Lake Winnipesaukee for a lakeside break, then cross the Kancamagus Highway with stops at Sugar Hill Overlook and Sabbaday Falls, eat lunch in North Conway, drive US-302 east through Fryeburg and Bridgton to Songo Lock in Naples, and finish above Casco Bay in Portland around 4:15 pm.

Start in Boston: Boston Common

Leave from the Tremont Street edge of Boston Common with a full tank and coffee in hand. A 7:30 start gets you north of Manchester before the morning rush builds and reaches Meredith for a late-morning break, with plenty of daylight for the finale: Portland sunset is 6:20 pm on October 3 and 5:45 pm by late October.

North on I-93 through Manchester, then onto NH-3A through Hooksett and Bow to skirt the I-93 toll plaza, rejoining I-93 and continuing to the Lakes Region exit for Meredith. This is the longest stretch of the day; the driver swap and a stretch are at Meredith.

Tolls: No tolls on this routing. Staying on I-93 is about 8 minutes faster in OSM but passes the NH Turnpike Hooksett Main toll plaza; the NH DOT toll-rate page could not be opened during research, so no amount is stated (as of 2026-10-03).

Meredith: lakefront break at Hesky Park

A first break about two hours in: Meredith sits on Meredith Bay at the western end of Lake Winnipesaukee. Hesky Park is a small lakeside park on the bay, for a stretch and a first look at the lake. For coffee or a crepe, 48 Main Cafe & Creperie at 94 Main Street lists 7 am to 2 pm daily on its own site. Keep this to about half an hour: the Kancamagus is the main event.

Songo Lock, Naples

A quirky, short stop: Songo Lock is the last surviving lock of the 1830 Cumberland and Oxford Canal, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Wikipedia). It sits at the northern edge of Sebago Lake State Park where the Songo and Crooked rivers meet, and is state-maintained. Take 20 minutes to look at the lock and stretch your legs before the final run into Portland. Maine's park bureau lists boat lockage May 1 to October 15, 9 am to 6 pm.

Alternative route

Alternative route: the Seacoast and York coast (no turnpikes)

A very different day: skip the mountains and stay on the coast. Newburyport, NH-1A along the Hampton and Rye shore, Portsmouth, the York coast on ME-103, then US-1 and ME-9 through Ogunquit and Kennebunkport and on into Portland. OSM puts it at a bit under 4 hours of driving versus about 1 h 53 min on the direct I-95 run, so it is a full coastal day trip with room for beach, lobster-shack and lighthouse stops. Pins force the road: leaving the pins off sends the router back onto I-95 and the Maine Turnpike.

Alternative route

Alternative route: Lakes Region, Sandwich and Chocorua Lake (no Kancamagus)

If the Kancamagus is jammed with foliage traffic, swap it for the quieter country roads of the southern White Mountains: Meredith and Center Harbor on Lake Winnipesaukee, Sandwich and Tamworth, then Chocorua Lake on NH-16 (a well-known New Hampshire view of Mount Chocorua, per New England travel writers), Conway and US-302 into Maine and Songo Lock. It is about 214 miles and 4 h 51 min of driving by OSM, about 44 miles and 38 minutes shorter than the main Kancamagus route, and it skips the mountain pass.

Good to know

Assumption. Saturday departure at 7:30 am. Every stop used is listed as open daily; on peak-foliage weekends choose a weekday if you can. New England travel writers say the Kancamagus is busiest on weekends and best before about 9 am, and the state's tourism site suggests early October peaks in the White Mountains.

Driving rhythm. About 2 h to Meredith (break), 1 h 10 min to the Kanc overlook and falls (short stops), 35 minutes to lunch, then about 54 and 46 minutes to the Songo Lock and Portland. Total driving 5 h 29 min and 258.6 miles; the whole day from 7:30 am to about 5:15 pm. Trade drivers at Meredith or lunch. Kancamagus mileage is slow (35 to 45 mph limits and pull-offs), and OSM's times do not include foliage traffic, so allow 30 to 60 minutes of cushion in peak weekends.

Tolls (basis: avoided). This route uses no toll road: leg 1 uses NH-3A through Hooksett and Bow to skirt the I-93 Hooksett toll plaza (it costs about 8 minutes versus staying on I-93), and US-302 in Maine is free; the Maine Turnpike is not used. If you stay on I-93 you will cross the NH Turnpike Hooksett Main plaza; NH DOT's toll page could not be opened during research, so check the current rate and E-ZPass pricing there. Total tolls on this route: $0.

White Mountain National Forest recreation pass. The Forest Service lists daily passes, annual passes, interagency passes (including America the Beautiful) and Golden Age / Access passes as valid. Sabbaday Falls is a fee site in the spring-through-fall season per the Forest Service; pay at the on-site station or have a valid pass displayed. Check the current price on the Forest Service pass page.

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-03). Not checked live: confirm NHDOT road conditions for I-93 and NH-112, the White Mountain National Forest alerts page, and the state of foliage (visitnh.gov foliage tracker) before leaving. Maine's park bureau lists Songo Lock boat operation May 1 to October 15 (9 am to 6 pm); the lock structure can be viewed from the park area either way. Portland sunset is 6:20 pm on October 3 and 5:45 pm on October 24.

Confirm before you go. Opening hours, prices and fees in this plan come from the businesses' own sites or the Forest Service; phone numbers and hours change, so confirm before you go.
