A one-day, one-way drive from Manhattan to Boston that skips I-95 and the Mass Pike: Taconic Parkway, a Connecticut covered bridge, lunch in Stockbridge, Quabbin Reservoir and Concord's North Bridge, with no tolls.

The story

New York to Boston is a four-hour blur on I-95 or the Mass Pike. This is the long way, on purpose: up the Taconic State Parkway, a toll-free road with no service plazas, and across the Berkshires on roads that were built to be looked at.

The first leg is the long one, about two and a half hours to the West Cornwall Covered Bridge, a lattice-truss span over the Housatonic that makes a good first break. From there US-7 runs up the river valley to Stockbridge, where the Red Lion Inn and Main Street make an easy lunch.

The afternoon crosses the width of Massachusetts on free roads: US-20 and MA-9 through Northampton and Amherst to Quabbin Reservoir, a 39-square-mile reservoir with 181 miles of shoreline, then east across the state to Concord and the North Bridge, where the Revolution began. The finish is the short run down MA-2 to Boston Common.

It is a full day: 299.0 miles and 7 hours 3 minutes of driving, with stops spaced about every two hours. The tolled Mass Pike is avoided on purpose; the direct I-95 run is far shorter, so leave early and treat this as a day trip in its own right. Two alternatives (the Mohawk Trail and a quieter Litchfield Hills run) are in the options.

Logistics

Alternative route: the Mohawk Trail (MA-2) across northern Massachusetts

Same Taconic start, but turn north to Pittsfield and North Adams, then drive the Mohawk Trail, the winding stretch of MA-2 through Charlemont and Shelburne Falls to Greenfield and straight east to Boston with no Mass Pike. The route puts it at about the same length and time as the main plan, so it swaps the Stockbridge lunch and Quabbin for a mountain road and the Deerfield River villages.

Alternative route: Litchfield Hills and the Quiet Corner (a shorter, quieter day)

Skip the Berkshires. From Millerton go east on US-44 and CT-112 to Litchfield, then east across Connecticut by I-84 to Sturbridge and into Boston on free roads. The route shows it shorter than the main plan, so it suits a later start or a longer lunch.

Good to know

  • Assumption. Saturday departure at 7:00 am from Bryant Park. Quabbin Visitor Center is closed Wednesdays, so on a Wednesday walk the dam road only.
  • Driving rhythm. About 2 h 30 min to the covered bridge (the first break; the Taconic has no gas or services, so fuel up first), 48 min to Stockbridge, 1 h 34 min to Quabbin, 1 h 39 min to Concord, 32 min to Boston. Total 299.0 miles and 7 h 3 min; the day runs about 7:00 am to 5:58 pm with stops. City traffic and Berkshire towns can add time.
  • Tolls. No toll on this routing: toll-free routing is used for each leg. The Willis Avenue Bridge, FDR Drive, Sprain Brook and Taconic are free; the Taconic's only gantry (Thruway exit B2, listed on the Thruway toll schedule) is far north of the US-44 exit used here, and the Mass Pike (I-90) is avoided. Total tolls: $0.
  • Daylight. Sunset in Boston on a mid-October Saturday is about 5:50 pm, and earlier after the clocks change; the plan reaches Boston Common at about 5:38 pm, so keep to the schedule or start earlier in late October.
  • Current conditions (as of 2026-10-14). Not checked live. Quabbin's observation tower is listed as closed for renovations (the lookouts and dam road are open). Confirm Taconic State Parkway and MassDOT road work before leaving.
  • Confirm before you go. Hours and fees change; confirm on each business's or agency's own site.

Good to know: distances and drive times are typical figures without live traffic, and where routes are shown the route data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors. Toll amounts are estimates and change often, so check them in the DriftKin planner or with the toll authority before you plan around them. Opening hours, fees, prices, permits and closures also change, so confirm with the park or business before you go.
