Descend the Natural Entrance, circle the Big Room, and watch bats pour out of the cave at dusk. Day 2 is a relaxed desert day at Rattlesnake Springs and the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail, based in historic downtown Carlsbad.

  • Hike down the Natural Entrance, 750 feet into Carlsbad Cavern
  • Circle the Big Room, North America's largest single cave chamber by volume
  • Bat Flight Program at the cave mouth on summer evenings
  • Rattlesnake Springs, a cottonwood oasis for birdwatching
  • Stay in the historic Trinity Hotel in downtown Carlsbad

The story

Carlsbad Caverns is a trip with a built-in rhythm: go underground when the desert is hot, come back up for the evening show. This plan gives the cavern one unhurried morning, which is the right amount for most visitors, and spends the second day on the quieter surface side of the park.

On Day 1 you walk down the Natural Entrance, the way early explorers came, dropping about 750 feet into the dark, then circle the Big Room, the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America. You ride the elevator back up, eat, rest, and return at dusk for the Bat Flight Program, when Brazilian free-tailed bats stream out of the cave mouth.

Day 2 is deliberately gentle: the cottonwood oasis at Rattlesnake Springs, the 0.7-mile Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail, an early lunch, and an easy walk at the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens in Carlsbad.

The park has no lodging, so the trip bases at the historic Trinity Hotel in Carlsbad, about 27 miles and 32 minutes from the visitor center. This itinerary sticks to the self-guided trails; ranger-guided cave tours run on a limited basis and can be added if you confirm availability. A Guadalupe Mountains tie-in and the demanding Slaughter Canyon Cave Trail are listed as options.

Day by day

Day 1 · 6 stops

Down the Natural Entrance and Into the Big Room

Spend the cool, quiet morning underground, then retreat to Carlsbad for an afternoon rest and early dinner before driving back for the bats. One demanding effort (the descent), everything else is easy.

Natural Entrance Trail: Walk Down into the Cavern

The cavern's original way in is a switchbacking trail that drops about 750 feet in 1.25 miles, past Devil's Spring, the Whale's Mouth and Iceberg Rock. Daylight fades behind you as the temperature drops and the cave opens up. It is steep and not recommended for anyone with heart or breathing conditions, so choose the elevator instead if in doubt. Closed-toe shoes with good grip are the sensible choice. Allow about an hour.

Big Room Trail

At the bottom, the Big Room loop is the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America and the highlight for most visitors. The 1.25-mile path is relatively flat and takes about 90 minutes on average, passing towering formations and the rope ladder explorers used in 1924. Short on time or energy? A shortcut cuts it to about 0.6 mile and 45 minutes. Parts of the trail are wheelchair accessible.

Lunch at the Visitor Center Restaurant

Eating inside any cave is off limits except plain water, so lunch comes after the elevator ride up. The restaurant sits past the gift shop in the visitor center and serves snacks, drinks and hot and cold meals, with limited choices. Picnic tables at the east end of the parking lot work if you pack your own.

Base: The Trinity Hotel, Carlsbad

A restored 1892 bank building in downtown Carlsbad, about 27 miles and 32 minutes from the cavern visitor center. Its rooms page describes king and queen suites with flat screens, wine chillers and robes, and the restaurant is downstairs. Staying in town adds a half-hour drive each way, but it puts dinner and a bed in one historic building downtown. Drop bags and rest here before the evening bat flight (confirm check-in time).

Early Dinner at the Trinity Restaurant

Dinner service starts at 5 pm; an hour at the table leaves a comfortable buffer for the 32-minute drive and the amphitheater seating. The menu leans toward American Italian dishes such as lasagna and chicken parmigiana, with the restaurant's green chile cheeseburger on the breakfast and lunch menu. Free New Mexico wine tasting runs 4 to 6 pm Tuesday to Saturday. The restaurant is closed Mondays and Sunday nights, so book a Tuesday to Friday night or use Cascades Grill.

Bat Flight Program at the Natural Entrance

On summer evenings, Brazilian free-tailed bats pour out of the Natural Entrance in a spiralling stream, after a short ranger talk from the amphitheater, a five-minute walk from the visitor center. It is free, seating is first come first served, and the best flights usually come in late summer when young bats join the migrants. Cameras and phones are not allowed at the amphitheater, so leave them in the car and just watch. Expect a drive back to Carlsbad in the dark.

Time
Arrive by 7:00 pm for May and June; the talk starts before sunset and the flight follows, up to about an hour depending on when the bats emerge, so allow two hours including the walk. Start time changes with sunset. Seating is first come, first served. Electronic devices including phones and cameras are not allowed in the amphitheater area.

Rattlesnake Springs Oasis

A lush riparian pocket in the Chihuahuan Desert: a natural spring, a big grove of cottonwoods planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and shaded picnic tables. Birdwatching is good here year-round. It is a day-use area open in daylight hours, about 25 minutes from the visitor center, so it is an easy slow start. No swimming in the spring.

Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail

A labeled 0.7-mile loop behind the visitor center that explains the desert plants around you, with views toward the Guadalupe Mountains. The trailhead is past the visitor center at the far end of the east parking lot. It takes about 30 minutes with roughly 100 feet of climbing, and the upper 0.2 mile is wheelchair accessible out to a viewpoint with a shade shelter. It is short, so do it first thing and carry water; avoid it in the heat of the afternoon.

Option: Slaughter Canyon Cave Trail

A rugged climb to viewpoints over Slaughter Canyon, in the park's south section. Good to know

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-22)

  • Timed-entry reservation required for Carlsbad Cavern: $1.00, booked on recreation.gov or 877-444-6777; it only selects your entry time. Entrance pass bought at the visitor center is $15 per person ages 16 and up (America the Beautiful passes accepted) and is good for three days. The cavern is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Posted hours (page last updated May 2025): visitor center 9 am-5 pm; last entrance ticket sold 2:15 pm; cavern entry by elevator or hike 9:30 am-2:30 pm; last hike out 2:30 pm (finish by 3:30); last elevator out 4:45 pm. The cavern place record shows 8:30 am-2:15 pm, so confirm on arrival; the 10:00 slot in this plan fits either.
  • Ranger-guided tours are limited and some park pages conflict: the Ranger-Guided Tours page (updated 2026-05-13) lists Lower Cave Wednesdays at 9:30 am and King's Palace at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm Thursday to Tuesday when staffing allows (walk-up tickets), while the Basic Information page (updated September 2025) says tours are suspended. This plan stays self-guided; confirm at the visitor center or on recreation.gov.
  • As last posted (conditions page updated May 2025): Walnut Canyon Desert Drive and the Guadalupe Ridge (visitor center to Slaughter Canyon), Rattlesnake Canyon and Juniper Ridge trails are closed after flood damage.
  • Bat Flight: free, no reservation, may be cancelled for lightning. One park page says April through October; another says Memorial Day weekend through October. The start time follows sunset, so check the posted time at the visitor center.
  • Fire restrictions: the conditions page shows a fire-danger ban while a later alert says restrictions were lifted; check with a ranger before using a grill or stove.
  • The visitor center restaurant is listed as open until 3 pm.
  • Trinity rooms: the rooms page shows $200 nightly for Rooms 101 and 102 and $240 for Room 206. Living Desert Zoo: $10 adults, 9 am-5 pm, last entry 3:30 pm.

Evergreen tips

  • Weekday plan: the Trinity restaurant is closed Mondays and Sunday nights, and breakfast starts at 8 am on Sundays. Use Tuesday to Friday nights for Day 1 (Day 2 then falls Wednesday to Saturday); the hotel's check-in time is not listed on its site, so confirm it or leave bags.
  • Closed-toe shoes with traction are recommended in the cavern; wear a light layer. Only plain water is allowed in the cave.
  • Do not wear shoes, clothing or gear that were in another cave; you walk across a bio-cleaning mat when you exit.
  • Only one demanding effort per day here: the Natural Entrance descent on Day 1. Take the elevator down if in doubt.
  • Bring a hat and water for the surface trails; no reliable water in the backcountry.
  • Bat Flight start times follow sunset, which is after 8 pm in May and June and much earlier by late September. This plan's 7:00 pm arrival suits May and June; in late September arrive about an hour earlier and skip the sit-down dinner. Seating is first come, first served.
  • Drive times (OpenStreetMap): Trinity to visitor center 27 mi, 32 min; visitor center to Rattlesnake Springs 15.5 mi, 25 min; visitor center to Living Desert Zoo 32 mi, 43 min.
  • Gateway: Carlsbad (about 20 miles from the park) or White's City (7 miles); the park has no lodging.
