Two days at Mammoth Cave National Park: the Historic Tour, a gentler Frozen Niagara Tour, the Cedar Sink hike and Green River overlooks, based at the in-park lodge with Cave City barbecue for lunch.

  • Walk the 2-hour, 540-stair Historic Tour
  • Take the short, easy Frozen Niagara Tour
  • Descend into Cedar Sink on 295 stairs
  • Look over the Green River Valley
  • Barbecue lunch in Cave City

The story

Mammoth Cave is the world's longest known cave system, and the only way inside is on a ranger-led tour. That makes this a two-day trip with a simple rhythm: caves on top of a forested, river-cut karst landscape, with short walks to see what lies above.

Day one is built around the Historic Tour, a 2-hour walk through the huge rooms that made the cave famous. After lunch at the lodge, take an easy afternoon on the Green River Bluffs and an overlook with valley views.

Day two begins with the short, easy Frozen Niagara Tour, then heads above ground to Cedar Sink, a sinkhole reached by a rolling forest path and 295 stairs. Lunch in Cave City and a stroll on the old Mammoth Cave Railroad bed finish the loop.

The base is The Lodge at Mammoth Cave, the park's only roofed lodging, so there is no commuting between tours. Book cave tickets well ahead; the schedule shifts by season. Bring a jacket, since the cave is a steady 54 F, and expect plenty of stairs.

Historic Tour

The classic first cave experience. NPS lists this as a 2-hour, 2-mile ranger-led tour with 540 stairs, rated moderate, through the huge rooms that gave Mammoth Cave its name and down into tighter passages. Cave tours are the only way to see inside, and tickets are sold in advance on Recreation.gov. Departures vary by season (see the dated block); collect tickets at least 30 minutes early.

Green River Bluffs Overlook

A forest walk to the overlook above the Green River, which NPS says looks northeast along the river valley and reaches it along the 1.3-mile Green River Bluffs Trail. Fall color and spring green make the valley view. NPS does not state a trailhead or elevation gain, so ask at the visitor center where to start; wear real shoes.

Doyel Valley Overlook

NPS calls this the only scenic overlook in the park reachable by vehicle. Two information panels explain the historic communities that once lived in the valley below, and a picnic table makes it an easy late-afternoon pause. It sits on Mammoth Cave Parkway, 2.2 miles south of the visitor center, and also touches the Hike and Bike trail.

Day 2

Frozen Niagara, Cedar Sink and the Old Railroad

An early easy cave tour, a sinkhole hike, Cave City barbecue and a gentle railroad-bed walk.

Activity8:45 AM · 1 h 15 min

Frozen Niagara Tour

The easiest ranger-led walk to a showpiece. NPS lists it as 1.25 hours and 0.25 miles with 64 stairs plus an optional 98, rated easy, and says it visits a naturally decorated section of flowstone and dripstone. It suits a second cave tour without a big climb. Departures typically include an early-morning slot, with a late-morning one on some weekends (exact slots in the dated block), so book it first and pick up tickets 30 minutes early.

Cedar Sink Trail

A rolling dirt path leads about 0.75 miles to a huge sinkhole, where stairs drop into a wildflower-rich bowl with flat, stable footing at the bottom. NPS describes a 1-mile loop beginning and ending at the trailhead, with 295 stairs in total and early mornings the quietest. The trailhead is about 10-15 minutes from the visitor center.

Distance note
NPS calls it a 1-mile loop from the trailhead but also says the approach to the sink is about 0.75 mi, so the figures do not fully reconcile. The 150 ft is NPS wording for feet of stairs descended into the sink (and about 150 ft climbed back out), not a surveyed trail gain. Third-party listings give about 1.8 mi and ~312 ft. Leashed pets allowed (6 ft).

Walk the Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike and Hike Trail

A gentle farewell on the old Mammoth Cave Railroad bed. NPS says the 1886 line carried early tourists until its last run on August 1, 1931, and a 9-mile stretch is now a hike-and-bike trail with interpretive waysides, historic sites and overlooks. It can be joined near the visitor center; walk as far as you like and turn around.

Good to know

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-06)

  • Tickets: NPS says tickets are required to enter Mammoth Cave and strongly recommends booking on Recreation.gov; walk-up availability is not guaranteed. Tour schedules change by season. NPS-published departures: Historic Tour 10:00 AM and 12:15 PM daily through Nov 14 (no Historic Tour is listed Nov 15-Feb 28; spring 2027 not yet posted). Frozen Niagara: Oct 4-31, 8:45 AM and 4:15 PM daily plus 11:30 AM Sat-Sun; Nov 1-14, 9:15 AM daily plus 11:45 AM Fri-Sun; Nov 15-28, 10:00 AM, 12:45 PM and 2:30 PM; later 2:45 PM only. Day 2 assumes the 8:45 AM Frozen Niagara departure (daily Oct 4-31); before Oct 4 the slot was 9:00 AM, and from Nov 1 it is 9:15 AM, so re-time accordingly; shift Cedar Sink to the afternoon if you book a later slot. NPS fees page lists Historic $24 and Frozen Niagara $26 for adults (Recreation.gov may add fees).
  • NPS alerts: the Green River Ferry is suspended because of low water; the Accessible Tour is unavailable due to cave elevator problems; the Old Guides, Heritage and Sunset Point trails and parts of the Sinkhole Trail are closed for rehabilitation (this plan avoids them).
  • Entrance: no park entrance fee (NPS); fees apply to cave tours and camping. Senior and Access Pass holders get 50% off tours (cardholder only).
  • Visitor center: NPS lists 8:30 AM-4:30 PM daily as standard hours, with longer hours in summer; closed December 25. Mammoth Cave Campground reservations run March 1 to November 30 per NPS.
  • The Lodge at Mammoth Cave: Woodland Cottages are typically April 1 to November 1 per the lodge site.

Evergreen tips

  • The cave stays about 54 F year-round; bring a light jacket and sturdy, grippy shoes. No flash, strollers, tripods or walking sticks on tours (NPS).
  • Do not follow GPS: from I-65 use Exit 53 (Cave City) or Exit 48 (Park City) as NPS directs.
  • Tours check in at the visitor center; arrive at least 30 minutes early. Stair counts matter: the Historic Tour has 540, Frozen Niagara 64 plus an optional 98.
  • Spring and fall bring the best foliage and wildflowers at Cedar Sink; summer is hot and busiest, so book tours early.
  • Cave City and Park City, about 10 miles away, have the closest off-site meals and rooms; Bowling Green is farther.

Good to know: distances and drive times are typical figures without live traffic, and where routes are shown the route data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors. Toll amounts are estimates and change often, so check them in the DriftKin planner or with the toll authority before you plan around them. Opening hours, fees, prices, permits and closures also change, so confirm with the park or business before you go.
