Two relaxed days built around the year-round south approach to Crater Lake. One morning climb to Garfield Peak, a lookout hike at Watchman Peak and a scenic loop along East Rim Drive, with pie at Beckie's Cafe each day.

  • Garfield Peak, the trip's one big climb, done in the cool morning
  • Sinnott Memorial Overlook, a 1930 stone overlook with caldera exhibits
  • Watchman Peak lookout and a picnic at Cloudcap, the highest paved overlook
  • Phantom Ship Overlook and Vidae Falls on East Rim Drive
  • A year-round base at historic Union Creek Resort, with pie at Beckie's Cafe

The story

Crater Lake is a caldera, not a hole: a mountain that blew itself apart about 7,700 years ago and filled with snowmelt, leaving the deepest lake in the United States. This plan treats it that way, with one real effort a day and the rest given to the rim.

You sleep outside the park at Union Creek Resort, on the year-round OR-62 approach, and drive about 35 minutes to Rim Village. Day one is the Garfield Peak climb, an easy lunch on the promenade, and the Sinnott Memorial exhibits before you head down to park headquarters. Day two is the Rim Drive day: a short climb to the Watchman Peak lookout, then a slow picnic loop along East Rim Drive with Phantom Ship, Vidae Falls and a gentle forest walk on the way out.

The lakeshore trail is closed for reconstruction, and Rim Drive closes for snow, so this is an August-and-September plan (July works if East Rim Drive has opened). Layer up for cold mornings, and expect the lake to vanish in cloud now and then. When it appears, it is a blue you will not mistake for any other.

Day by day

Day 1 · 6 stops

Rim Village, Garfield Peak and Headquarters

Leave Union Creek about 8:55 am and reach Rim Village by 9:40 for the climb to Garfield Peak, then spend the rest of the day on gentle stops: lunch, Sinnott Memorial and the Steel Information Center, with dinner at Beckie's, which closes at 6:00 pm.

Garfield Peak Trail

The one big effort of the trip, so it goes first, in the cool of the morning. The trail leaves the east end of Rim Village, passes through trees and meadow, then switchbacks up a ridge with the caldera opening below. Expect marmots, pikas and, in season, wildflowers. Take it slowly: the whole route sits above 7,000 feet and the air is thin.

Lunch at Rim Village Cafe & Gifts

Grab-and-go sandwiches, salads and snacks, eaten on the Rim Village promenade with the lake in front of you. It is the simplest meal on the trip, and it keeps the afternoon unhurried. Buy a second sandwich for tomorrow's picnic on East Rim Drive.

Sinnott Memorial Overlook

A stone overlook built into the caldera wall in 1930, with exhibits on how Mount Mazama collapsed and the lake formed, plus an unobstructed view straight down to the water. A short stop that earns a place by explaining everything you have just looked at from Garfield Peak.

Watchman Peak

A short, moderate climb to a fire lookout with 360-degree views across the lake and surrounding landscape. The trail gets very crowded at sunset, so late morning is calmer. Stop at Rim Village Cafe on the way for a picnic lunch to eat later on East Rim Drive.

East Rim Drive: Cloudcap, Phantom Ship and Vidae Falls

Drive down the east side of the loop from North Junction. Cloudcap is the highest paved overlook in the park, a good place for the picnic lunch. Then Phantom Ship Overlook, where a 170-ft rock island sits off the shore like a ghost ship, and Vidae Falls beside the road. The road is narrow and winding with no shoulders and a 35 mph limit, and it is often shared with cyclists.

Good to know

  • Altitude and weather: The rim sits around 7,000 feet. Bring layers and sunscreen; mornings are cold and afternoon storms can roll in. When rain or snow arrives, the lake is usually hidden by cloud.
  • Fuel: There is no gasoline in the park. The nearest stations are at Prospect on OR-62, Crater Lake Junction on US-97 and Diamond Lake Resort off OR-138.
  • Winter driving: The park is a snow zone, so chains or traction tires are required on all vehicles during winter conditions.
  • Phones: There are no cell towers in the park; cell service is spotty at Rim Village and the overlooks. Download maps before you go.
  • Food: Rim Village Cafe sells grab-and-go food only; Union Creek's Beckie's Cafe is closed in the evening (6:00 pm listed), so plan dinner for about 4:45 pm.
  • Drive times: Union Creek to Rim Village is about 24 miles and 35-40 minutes; allow longer behind slow traffic on Rim Drive.
  • East Rim Drive timing: It often opens only in mid-July, depending on snowpack, so August and September are the safest months for Day 2.
  • Crowds: Watchman Peak is busiest at sunset; Sinnott Memorial and the Rim Village promenade are busiest from late morning.

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-14)

  • Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed for a major rehabilitation project; the schedule calls for about three summers of work, so there is no lake access or boat tour in 2026.
  • The Rim Visitor Center is scheduled to close for the season from 2026-10-19 until late May 2027; Sinnott Memorial exhibits typically run until mid-October.
  • East Rim Drive is open for through travel but with some traffic control and some pull-outs closed as work finishes for the season; full completion is expected in 2027. Pinnacles Road is open only to hikers and bikers.
  • Rim Drive and the North Entrance Road close for the season on November 1, or earlier if snow is significant. The South and West entrances (OR-62) stay open year-round.
  • Steel Information Center is open 9:00 am-5:00 pm daily, with winter hours of 10:00 am-4:00 pm from November 1 and closed December 25.
  • Crater Lake Lodge, the Mazama cabins, Annie Creek Restaurant and Mazama Campground are listed closed for the season; Lost Creek Campground is closed all of 2026.
  • Entrance fee: $30 per private vehicle from mid-May through October; $20 in winter (valid 7 days; price as of 2026-10-14).

Good to know: distances and drive times are typical figures without live traffic, and where routes are shown the route data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors. Toll amounts are estimates and change often, so check them in the DriftKin planner or with the toll authority before you plan around them. Opening hours, fees, prices, permits and closures also change, so confirm with the park or business before you go.
