Two paced days on Chapin Mesa: Park Point and a ranger-guided Cliff Palace tour on day one, then Petroglyph Point and relaxed overlooks on day two. Stay at Far View Lodge, 15 miles inside the park.

  • Park Point Overlook, the park's high point with sweeping Four Corners views
  • A 45-minute ranger-guided Cliff Palace tour with four ladders
  • Mesa Top Loop Road: 700 years of Ancestral Pueblo building in six miles
  • Petroglyph Point Trail to a panel of more than thirty pecked figures
  • A comfortable base at Far View Lodge, the only lodging inside the park

The story

Mesa Verde is a park built around one question: what did people make of a high, dry plateau? Over two days you answer it from several angles, going up to the park's windy high point, down ladders into Cliff Palace, along the six-mile Mesa Top Loop that traces 700 years of building, and finally across a rugged rim trail to a panel of petroglyphs.

The geography drives the plan. The Visitor and Research Center sits at the entrance, but the cliff dwellings are on Chapin Mesa, about 20 miles and 45 minutes of winding road away, and 75 minutes is the time to allow to reach the Cliff Palace parking lot. Far View Lodge, 15 miles in, cuts that to a short hop and makes breakfast and dinner easy. Day 1 pairs the one ticketed tour with relaxed driving; Day 2 spends its single big effort, Petroglyph Point, in the morning, then eases into museum, cafe and overlooks.

Everything is above 7,000 feet, so drink water, take it slowly, and layer: the mornings are cold in spring and autumn. The park is in the middle of nowhere in the best way, with a dark-sky certification for stars at night. Book the cliff dwelling tour as soon as tickets open, 14 days ahead.

Day by day

Day 1 · 6 stops

Park Point, Cliff Palace and the Mesa Top Loop

Orient at the visitor center, then climb to Park Point before the day's one effort, the Cliff Palace tour. The afternoon is an easy loop drive and dinner at the lodge.

Park Point Overlook

Start high. After a stop at the Visitor and Research Center for the entrance pass, current road conditions and a trail map, the Main Park Road climbs to the park's highest point, a breezy lookout with a historic fire lookout tower. On a clear morning the San Juan Mountains, La Plata Mountains, Sleeping Ute Mountain and the New Mexico high desert all sit in one view. It is also a gentle first dose of altitude before the day's ladders.

Cliff Palace ranger-guided tour

The signature experience: a 45-minute ranger-led walk into the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The route drops down uneven stone steps and climbs four ladders, about 100 feet of elevation change over a quarter mile, so it is moderate rather than extreme. The tour needs a timed ticket booked in advance and you must be at the overlook 15 minutes early; allow 75 minutes from the entrance. The 11:30 slot leaves a cushion after Park Point.

It is the practical lunch stop on this end of the park, a short drive from Cliff Palace, so no one has to carry a cooler up the mesa. Eat early afternoon; its hours shorten later in the year.

Mesa Top Loop Road

A six-mile loop with paved paths to twelve sites that trace 700 years of Ancestral Pueblo building, from pithouses to multi-story cliff dwellings. The highlights are Square Tower House Overlook and the views of Cliff Palace from Sun Point View and Sun Temple. Pull in at whichever stops catch your eye and linger; no tickets are needed. The park also offers a free downloadable audio tour narrated from a Pueblo perspective.

Get the demanding hike out of the way early, then spend the rest of the day on easy museum, cafe and overlook stops before heading out.

Petroglyph Point Trail

The day's one demanding effort, done first while you are fresh. Rated very challenging, this loop is narrow and unmaintained, with stone stairs, steep edges, loose rock and a scramble up a 100-foot cliff at the end. Counterclockwise is the recommended direction. The reward is a panel of more than thirty pecked figures about 1.4 miles in, plus views into Spruce and Navajo canyons. Carry water.

Mesa Verde Museum and Spruce Tree House Overlook

A cool-down stop. The 1920s stone museum screens an orientation film on the hour and half-hour and has exhibits on Ancestral Pueblo life. Behind it, the overlook looks across a narrow canyon at Spruce Tree House, the park's best-preserved cliff dwelling, with much original wood, wall and plaster still visible. The dwelling itself can be viewed but not entered.

An easy, level out-and-back through old pinyon-juniper forest to three overlooks on the edge of Soda Canyon. Good to know

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-22)

  • The 2026 ranger-guided cliff dwelling tour season ran May 4 to October 21 and is over for the year. Tour tickets are sold on recreation.gov 14 days ahead at 8:00 am MDT, and the 2027 schedule had not been posted at the time of writing.
  • Far View Lodge, Metate Room and Morefield Campground were scheduled to operate April 17 to October 18, 2026 (Morefield April 24 to October 18). Spruce Tree Terrace Cafe runs 11:00 am to 2:00 pm from October 1.
  • Mesa Verde Museum hours are 10:00 am to 3:00 pm from October 22 to December 31, 2026; it is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Spruce Tree House has been closed to entry since 2015 because of rockfall danger; it can only be seen from the overlooks behind the museum.
  • Far View Sites and the Cedar Tree Tower and Farming Terrace areas were closed for road improvements, and road-work delays on the first four miles of the Main Park Road were posted. Check the park's conditions page before going.
  • Entrance fee: $30 per private vehicle May 1 to October 22, 2026, then $20 from October 23, 2026 (valid seven days); the park does not take cash.

Planning

  • Best months: May, June, September and early October, when tours, the lodge and cafes are typically running. Summer brings heat, storms and the biggest crowds.
  • Reserve the Cliff Palace tour first, then build days around it. Expect ladders and keep hands free; no tripods are allowed.
  • Balcony House is the tougher ladder-and-tunnel tour; do not pair it with Petroglyph Point on one day.
  • All of Mesa Verde sits at 7,000 to 8,500 feet. Drink plenty of water, wear layers and plan for sudden weather. There is little or no cell service.
  • Dogs are not allowed on most trails; stay on trails. Arrive at the Visitor and Research Center, the first left after leaving Highway 160, before heading up.
  • Day 2 means checking out of Far View Lodge by 11:00 am; load the car before you leave for the trailhead.
