The story

The direct run from Portland to Bend is a three-hour slog over US-26. This route goes the long way instead, out through the Columbia River Gorge, around Mt. Hood and down onto the high desert.

The morning belongs to the Gorge. I-84 and the old Corbett Hill Road lead up to Vista House, a 1918 landmark on the cliff at Crown Point, then it is east along the river to Hood River for lunch at pFriem, a brewpub steps from the water. About 60 of the day's miles are on I-84, and this is where they are.

After lunch the drive gets good. OR-35 climbs out of the Hood River Valley and swings around the east side of Mt. Hood, and Timberline Road carries you to Timberline Lodge, the WPA-built lodge that sits on the mountain itself. Back on US-26 the forest thins into dry plateau at the Museum at Warm Springs, where the Warm Springs, Wasco and Paiute peoples tell their own story. The last hour runs through Madras and Redmond to Bend and a walk beside Mirror Pond.

The day is 230.3 miles and 4 h 39 min of driving, no tolls, with a driver swap at lunch and at Timberline. Pick a Friday or Saturday: Vista House and the museum are only open on certain days.

Good to know

  • Assumption. Friday or Saturday departure at 9:15 am: Vista House is open Friday to Monday and the museum Tuesday to Saturday, so only those two days work for both.
  • Rhythm. Legs of 31, 49, 61, 66 and 72 minutes: 230.3 miles and 4 h 39 min of driving, tolls $0. Swap drivers at lunch and at Timberline. Arrive in Bend about 5:44 pm.
  • Roads. About 60 miles are on I-84 (19 out of Portland, 41 to Hood River); the rest is OR-35, US-26 and US-97, two-lane mountain and high-desert road. No toll roads on the route.
  • Season. Best May to October. From about November to April expect snow and ice on OR-35, US-26 and Timberline Road: carry chains or traction tires and follow the signs. Light vehicles may use traction tires instead of chains unless a sign requires chains. Check TripCheck before you go.
  • Weather. Mt. Hood can be hidden by cloud; Vista House closes in high wind. Daylight shrinks quickly after the clocks go back on Nov 1: the last leg would then run into dusk.
  • Food. Lunch in Hood River is the one real meal; Bend has plenty of dinner choices a few minutes' walk from Drake Park.
  • Current conditions (as of 2026-10-22). Timberline Lodge is on its fall schedule with several mountain venues closed for the season. The museum has no outdoor trails open. Vista House is open Friday to Monday, 9 am to 5 pm, and a state parking permit is needed at Crown Point (Oregon State Parks day-use permits are $10 for residents and $12 for non-residents per day where required). Bend sunset is 6:06 pm on Oct 24 and 5:56 pm on Oct 31; clocks go back Nov 1. OR-242 over McKenzie Pass (alternative route) closes to vehicles in winter; check TripCheck for its status. No closure notices for OR-35 or US-26 turned up in a web search on this date; check TripCheck before leaving.
  • Confirm before you go. Hours and fees come from each operator's site; confirm before you leave.

Good to know: distances and drive times are typical figures without live traffic, and where routes are shown the route data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors. Toll amounts are estimates and change often, so check them in the DriftKin planner or with the toll authority before you plan around them. Opening hours, fees, prices, permits and closures also change, so confirm with the park or business before you go.
