The story

The quick way from San Diego to Palm Springs is a freeway slog. This route spends the day on back roads instead: 220.7 miles and 4 h 52 min of driving, no tolls.

You leave Old Town on I-8, then turn north onto CA-79 through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park's oaks and pines to Julian, where an early lunch at Mom's Pie House ends with a slice of apple pie. From Julian the road runs to Warner Springs and drops down Montezuma Valley Road into the Borrego Valley, where the Anza-Borrego visitor center explains the desert before you cross it.

Next is east on the Borrego Salton Seaway and north on CA-86 to the Salton Sea, a wide shoreline of birds and big sky at the state recreation area. The last stretch is CA-111 through Coachella Valley farm country, Indio and Palm Desert and into Palm Springs, ending at Albert Frey's roofline under the mountains.

Plan for a Monday 8:50 am start. Two alternatives are in the options: Palms to Pines over CA-74, 55 miles shorter, or the Banner Grade and Yaqui Pass shortcut into Borrego.

Start in San Diego: Old Town State Historic Park

Old Town is close to I-8 east. Top up fuel and pack water and snacks: lunch comes early in Julian, and the desert stretch after Borrego Springs is long. The park's visitor center opens at 10 am, after you have gone, so treat the grounds as a meeting point.

Alternative route: Palms to Pines over CA-74 from Julian

Skip the desert loop: from Julian north on CA-79 through Warner Springs, then CA-371 to Anza and the Palms to Pines scenic byway (CA-74), a winding descent from the mountains to the desert at Palm Desert, then CA-111 into Palm Springs. The whole day is 166.1 miles and about 3 h 26 min of driving, roughly 55 miles and 1 h 26 min less than the main route. It gives up Borrego and the Salton Sea; fill up in Julian, since cell service can be spotty along the byway.

Good to know

  • Assumption. Monday 2026-10-26 departure at 8:50 am. Mom's is open 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays, both state park visitor centers are open daily in October, and the Palm Springs center is open 10 am to 5 pm, so reach it by about 4:35 pm.
  • Rhythm. Legs of 1 h 13 min, 1 h, 1 h 18 min and 1 h 21 min: 220.7 miles and 4 h 52 min of driving, tolls $0. Swap drivers at Borrego Springs. Fuel up in Julian or Borrego Springs: cell coverage inside Anza-Borrego is limited.
  • Highway mix. About 37 miles of I-8 at the start, then CA-79, county roads and CA-111 with no interstate after Descanso.
  • Season. The Salton Sea page recommends October through May (50-70 F). Wildflower bloom in Anza-Borrego is typically late winter into spring, not late October; summer midday is very hot and the Borrego visitor center is weekends and holidays only in June to September.
  • Food. Lunch is early (10:15 am); carry water and a snack for the afternoon.
  • Current conditions (as of 2026-10-22). Anza-Borrego: Coyote Canyon Road is closed, the first palm grove on the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail is closed after fire damage (the 3-mile round trip now ends at a viewpoint), visitor-center and trailhead parking is $10 per vehicle, and open fires are restricted in extreme heat. Salton Sea SRA: day use $7 per vehicle ($5 seniors); the Mecca Beach and Bombay Beach campgrounds and Varner Harbor are closed; vehicles are not allowed on the beach; the park is open with restricted services.
  • Confirm before you go. Hours and fees come from each operator's site; confirm before you leave.

Toll amounts are estimates and change often, so check them in the DriftKin planner or with the toll authority before you plan around them. Opening hours, fees, prices, permits and closures also change, so confirm with the park or business before you go.
