A one-day, one-way drive from Denver to Durango, Colorado: 373.1 miles and about 7 hours 52 minutes of driving over Monarch Pass, through Ouray and over Red Mountain Pass on the Million Dollar Highway. Two short breaks, three real stops and a lunch in Ouray, no tolls, and a long mountain day best done in summer or early fall.

The story

Most maps will send you from Denver to Durango over Wolf Creek Pass, and that is a perfectly good road. This plan takes the longer, higher one on purpose: west on US-50 to Monarch Pass and the Continental Divide, across the Gunnison country to Montrose, then south on US-550 up into the San Juan Mountains.

The day is long, about 373 miles and 7 hours 52 minutes of pure driving, so it starts before sunrise and keeps the stops short. After a break in Fairplay, Monarch Pass is the first big breath, a 20-minute stand on the Divide at 11,312 feet. Then a Gunnison break and the run to Ouray, where Main Street and a pub lunch with a rooftop set you up for the Million Dollar Highway.

South of Ouray the road tightens into the Uncompahgre Gorge, a cliff-hugging stretch with no guardrails, before it climbs to Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet. After a short pullout, the road drops into Silverton, a Victorian mining town where a short walk along Greene Street feels like stepping back a century. The last hour crosses Molas and Coal Bank Passes before the road unrolls into Durango and the end of Main Avenue.

It is a day for confident drivers, a full tank and a close eye on the weather: October is when snow starts to close this route.

Day by day

Day 1

Denver to Durango: Monarch Pass, Ouray and the Million Dollar Highway

Leave Denver at 06:15, break in Fairplay and cross Monarch Pass by 09:45, then break in Gunnison and run to lunch in Ouray. After lunch comes the Million Dollar Highway over Red Mountain Pass (with a delay buffer for roadwork), a walk through Silverton, and the last hour into Durango by about 17:20.

Start in Denver: Union Station

Leave from LoDo with a full tank and a coffee. The first hour is in the dark (sunrise in Denver on Oct 10 is about 07:04), but it is all city streets, I-25 and US-285, and the mountains start working on the sky by the time the road climbs out of the foothills. The planned breaks are Fairplay and Gunnison, so a half-tank here is the minimum.

Monarch Pass Overlook: crossing the Continental Divide

The first big pass of the day tops out at 11,312 feet on the Continental Divide, with a large parking area and views across the Sawatch Range, per the Forest Service. Stretch your legs, read the Divide sign and take the photos; there is a gift shop and a gondola at the pass, but this is a 20-minute break, not an attraction stop. The Forest Service lists no restrooms or drinking water at the overlook itself, so use Poncha Springs or plan on Gunnison.

This is the Million Dollar Highway proper, and CDOT's work zone south of Ouray is on it (the schedule holds a 25-minute buffer; see the dated conditions in the tips): the road climbs out of Ouray, hugging cliffs through the Uncompahgre Gorge with sheer drops and a lack of guardrails (per Wikipedia), then switchbacks up to the pass. Southbound you sit on the outer, drop-off side of the curves, so keep your speed down and use only designated pullouts.

Red Mountain Pass: top of the Million Dollar Highway

At 11,018 feet this is the high point of the San Juan Skyway, named for the iron-stained red slopes of Red Mountain on the northeast side of the pass. Visit Ouray lists the summit among the designated viewing areas along the highway. Use a pullout near the summit for the mountain views and the colors on the slopes, and keep it to 15 minutes: the scenery is the road itself, and the descent into Silverton is still ahead.

Silverton: Victorian Greene Street

Park and walk Greene Street, the main strip of a whole town described by Wikipedia as a National Historic Landmark District. NPS records highlight the 1882 Imperial Hotel, the gold-domed 1907 courthouse and the 1908 City Hall among the early buildings; Wikipedia lists more along Greene Street, including the Teller House and the county jail. Forty minutes is enough for the street, a coffee and a few photos.

Alternative route: Black Canyon of the Gunnison detour

Between Monarch Pass and Ouray, swing north on CO-347 to the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park for deep, narrow canyon views. OSM puts the Monarch Pass to Ouray run at 156.2 miles and 3 h 21 min via the South Rim Visitor Center, versus 142.1 miles and 2 h 55 min on the default, about 14 miles and 26 minutes more driving, before an hour or so at the rim. That would push the day past 11 hours, so make it a two-day trip with an overnight in Ouray or drop Silverton's walk. NPS lists the South Rim Visitor Center as open daily.

Alternative route: Telluride and Lizard Head Pass instead of Silverton

From Ouray, go back north to Ridgway, west over Dallas Divide on CO-62, south through Telluride and over Lizard Head Pass on CO-145, then US-160 east into Durango. OSM gives 160.4 miles and 3 h 49 min from Ouray, versus 72.3 miles and 1 h 37 min on the Million Dollar Highway via Silverton, so about 88 miles and 2 h 12 min more. It covers the western half of the San Juan Skyway, but it skips Red Mountain Pass and Silverton, and puts the full day above 10 hours of driving, so plan an overnight in Ouray or Telluride.

Alternative route: Independence Pass, Aspen and McClure Pass

Swap the Monarch Pass crossing for a higher, more dramatic north-side route: I-70 and US-24 (Leadville), over Independence Pass on CO-82 to Aspen, then CO-82 and CO-133 over McClure Pass to the Western Slope and on to Ouray. OSM gives 331.7 miles and 7 h 27 min from Denver to Ouray, versus 300.8 miles and 6 h 15 min via Monarch Pass (the sum of this plan's driving legs to Ouray): about 31 miles and 72 minutes more. Good to know

Route, timing and weekday assumptions

  • Assumed weekday: a Saturday departure (Saturday Oct 10, 2026 for the timings below). The one scheduled restaurant is open on Saturdays; Wednesdays, when it is closed, are a bad day to use this plan.
  • Why one day: the driving totals 7 h 52 min (472 minutes) over 373.1 miles, under the 8-hour mark, so this is one very long day rather than two. With two short breaks, a lunch, three short stops and a delay buffer it runs from 06:00 to about 18:10, so leave early and keep the stops short. The direct route south via US-285 and over Wolf Creek Pass on US-160 is about 343 miles and 6 h 38 min by OSM; this plan adds roughly 30 miles and 74 minutes of driving to take in Monarch Pass, Ouray and the Million Dollar Highway.
  • Clock: Mountain Daylight Time throughout. Computed sunrise on Oct 10 is about 07:04 in Denver, and sunset about 18:43 in Durango, so the day ends in daylight with a margin of about 35 minutes after the last item.
  • Stop rhythm: 99 minutes of driving to Fairplay, 101 to Monarch Pass, 57 to Gunnison, 118 to Ouray, 28 to Red Mountain Pass (plus a 25-minute delay buffer in the schedule), 17 to Silverton and 52 to Durango.

Driving notes (difficulty: strenuous)

  • This is a long mountain day: two passes above 11,000 feet (Monarch 11,312 ft and Red Mountain 11,018 ft), plus Molas and Coal Bank Passes above 10,000 feet.
  • The Uncompahgre Gorge section of the Million Dollar Highway south of Ouray has steep cliffs, narrow lanes and a lack of guardrails (per Wikipedia). Going south, you are on the outer, drop-off side of the curves according to Wikipedia; drive within your comfort, use pullouts, and avoid the road in the dark.
  • Fuel up in Gunnison or Montrose and again in Ouray or Silverton. There is no scheduled fuel stop on the Million Dollar Highway itself.
  • Tolls: none on any leg (as of 2026-10-06).

Current conditions (as of 2026-10-06)

  • US-550 work zone south of Ouray: CDOT's US 550 Retaining Wall and Tunnel Repairs project (retaining wall at milepost 88.6) is listed as ongoing, with completion expected in October 2026 (a July 2026 CDOT release said September). CDOT lists 24/7 single-lane alternating traffic on temporary signals, delays of up to 15 minutes at each work zone, an 11-foot vehicle width restriction (tunnel clearance 13 ft 9 in), and possible intermittent full closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the week. It could not be confirmed whether the zone will still be active on Oct 10; the schedule adds a 25-minute buffer between Ouray and Red Mountain Pass for it. Wide loads and RVs should check the width limit.
  • Mudslide closure: US-550 over Red Mountain Pass was closed by mudslides and debris in late July 2026 and reopened on Friday, July 31 at noon (CDOT).
  • Snow season on this route starts in October. Red Mountain Pass had a full closure of about four hours for winter maintenance in December 2025 (CDOT). Check COtrip.org and CDOT notices before leaving; if US-550 is closed there is no short detour.
  • Monarch Pass is open year-round but can close briefly in severe winter storms.
  • Ouray Brewery's site shows Tuesday Oct 6 and Oct 13 as closed; the Saturday plan is not affected.
  • For the Independence Pass alternate: CDOT closed CO 82 for the 2025-26 season on Nov 17; earlier closure dates found on CDOT pages fall between about Oct 28 and Nov 17. No 2026 closure date was found as of today.
